Kids Dentistry

Kids Dentistry , also know as pediatric dentistry include:

  • preventive treatment such as check-up, cleaning, fluoride application and fissure sealants,

  • restorative treatment such as tooth coloured fillings or fluoride releasing restorations. Glass ionomer cements (GIC's) are also tooth-coloured materials,  stick chemically to dental structures and release fluoride for a relatively long period, reducing risk of dental caries again.

  • oral surgery such as removal of baby teeth which sometimes may be needed. Extraction or removal of  teeth may sometimes be adviced because of
. extensive decay and or poor tooth prognosis
. infection or problem with the dental roots
        . trauma
. mishappen tooth or supernumerary tooth (extra small tooth)

The importance of Oral hygiene at an early age

We all know that having a set of healthy teeth is essential for children health, even if they are only baby teeth. Maintaining  a clean and healthy dentition should of course start at home, by introducing kids to basic oral hygience habits.

However as they get little older, it is also crucial to bring them to see us for a professional check-up.  They may not need any dental treatment at such early age but it is more for them to get familiar to the dental environment, Doing so while they still have healthy teeth and not in any pain , will eliminate their fear of dentist, the sound of the dental drill or other dental procedures.

Fissure sealants

In order to prevent dental decay on those newly erupted adult back teeth, our Burwood family dentists may recommend some fissure sealants. These are thin coating applied on the deep grooves on the chewing surface of the back teeth.  As these grooves are most likely at risk of decay when they have just erupted.
